Coalition of Santa Monica City Employees PAC stands in opposition of Measure LV

After much deliberation, the Coalition of Santa Monica City Employees PAC voted unanimously to join the growing opposition to Measure LV, which aims to require voter approval for development exceeding a base height of thirty-two feet.

“The coalition rarely takes a position on city, state, or county initiatives,” said Lauralee Asch, Coalition PAC President, “This measure is unique because of its impact on city employees and where we work. There are no exemptions for the repair or renovation of existing facilities, specifically, in the event of a natural disaster or earthquake, but also for routine operations. Further these matters would be decided every two years, unless the city funded a special election.” Asch added “The way the measure is written, it leaves more questions than it answers and will create more problems than it solves.”

The Coalition of Santa Monica City Employees PAC conducted a multi-step endorsement process, including a questionnaire and in-person interviews. The Coalition PAC represents over 1,600 city employees organized into ten separate associations and unions. The Coalition is comprised of non-sworn employees in all City departments, including: Public Works, Community & Cultural Services, Human Resources, Planning & Community Development, Police Department, Housing & Economic Development, Rent Control, Library, City Attorney’s Office, Finance, Information Systems, Fire and Big Blue Bus. City employees provide valuable services to residents, businesses and visitors of Santa Monica on a daily basis.

“While our individual associations continue to negotiate through the challenges of the day, we as a Coalition strongly believe that our current Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem and City Council members are best equipped to lead the City forward,” said Lauralee Asch, Coalition PAC President.
Asch added, “It was clear that as a team, our City Council is focused on relieving traffic, making smart planning and land use decisions, reducing homelessness. Mayor Vasquez, Councilmembers Ted Winterer, Gleam Davis, and Terry O’ Day are the best choice for renters, homeowners, and the city employees who deliver the services.”
